Admission
No admission test is required for the first year of Sanskrit.
Objectives
- Ability to read a text in Sanskrit and in devanāgarī
- Knowledge of the most important grammatical structures of Sanskrit language;
- Ability to understand and transita a short text in the original language;
- Knowledge of the basic vocabulary.
Program
The course aims to introduce students to a step by step learning of the most important grammatical structure of Sanskrit. After an introduction to Sanskrit language and devanāgarī alfhabet, lessons will focus on Sanskrit phonetic system, nouns and verbs, up to some initial remarks on syntax. Through the Sanskrit grammar exercises which can be found in the textbook, at the end of the course students will be able to read in devanāgarī, and they will also be able to read and translate sentences and short passages into Italian.
The course will be held in classroom. Upon request at the moment of the enrollment, the course may be also attended online. The IISC will provide students a link to access the virtual classroom and attend the course via live streaming. Lessons in streaming will be recorded and they will stay available for the students to see for a week.

Upon the completion of the course, students who have attended at lest the 75% of class hours, may access the course Sanskrit 2.
It is of the utmost importance that students have their textbooks since the first day of classes:
1. A. Aklujkar, Corso di Sanscrito, adattamento italiano a cura di R. Torella e C. Mastrangelo, Milano, Hoepli 2011.
2. J.S. Speyer, Sanskrit Syntax, Delhi 1973.
3. Excerpts (provided by the instructor) of Sanskrit texts.
– Students who have attended at least 75% of class hours may obtain a course completion certificate.
The course is also recognized by the MIUR – Regional School Office for Lazio as valid for the professional training of teaching staff.

Instructor
Beatrice Grieco is a post-Doc in Historical Linguistics at the University of Rome, La Sapienza, where she researches on Indian grammars and late-Vedic texts. She is a PhD in Historical Linguistic at the University for Foreigners of Siena and she graduated with honors in Glottology and Linguistic (La Sapienza University).
She took part to many conferences both in Italy and aborad (World Sanskrit Conference, International Conference on Historical Linguistics, ecc..), and she has published papers on periphrases and aspectual system of Ancient Indian language (Transactions of the Philological Society, Indo-Iranian Journal), and on some compounds of Sanskrit (Studi e Saggi Linguistici).
Her main interest are Ancient indian and Vedic syntax.
