COURSE PRESENTATION

Summer courses via streaming provide a new way in studying classical languages: in a short yet intensive time, they offer to international scholars and entushiasts an incredible experience, which combines the scientific nature of the Higher Education Courses at the IISC with the emotion of reviving the life of the Classical authors in the very same places where they have lived, together with friends who share a common love for literature and humanities. Classes are open to everyone and they require students to speak only in Greek, through the “IISC inductive-contextual methodology”.

DIDACTIC OFFERINGS

Lessons will be held completely in Greek. The professor will guide the students in speaking and writing in Ancient Greek, since the first day of classes, following a specific methodology. Lessons will progress gradually and progressively. They are structured in two modules: Basic and Intermediate+Advanced: it is possible to attend the whole course or even only one of the two modules.
Lessons will be held from Monday to Friday. The whole course takes place in 4 weeks: 1 week of Basic module + 3 weeks of Intermediate+Advanced module.

The Basic level is open to everyone: no pre-requisite is needed.
Those who wish to attend the Intermediate+Advanced level (without attending the Basic level) must take an entrance exam. We suggest to those who have not previous and sound knowledge of Greek through active use to attend the course starting from the Basic level.

Lessons require a serious commitment: professors will ask to spend some of the free time in personal study. The course deals with the entirety of Ancient Greek grammar and guarantees the learning of 1600 most frequent Greek words, which correspond to the 80% of the Classical authors’ vocabulary.

CERTIFICATES

Upon conclusion of the course, the Italian Institute for Classical Studies will grant a certificate attesting to the successful completion of the course.

In order to obtain the certificate, it is necessary:

Have attended at least 75% of the course hours.

UNIVERSITY CREDITS (CFU / ECTS)

The course can provide university credits.

On the basis of an agreement between the two institutions, the course is considered equivalent to those of the Pontifical Salesian University of Rome. Thanks to this convention, university students who have obtained the certificate of completion of the course will receive 9 CFU / ECTS (3 CFU/ECTS for the Basic Module + 6 CFU/ECTS for the Intermediate+Advanced Level) valid at that Athenaeum.

Since the certifications of the Pontifical Salesian University are recognized by the Italian State, credits obtained at the IICS are then able to be convalidated by state universities (without prejudice to the discretion that Italian law attributes to each individual institution).

The final grade indicated on the certificate is calculated out of 30, and will be calculated on the basis of the final exam grade and other possible evaluations by the instructors made throughout the course.

In order to obtain the certificate, it is necessary:

  • Have attended at least 75% of the course hours ;
  • To have attained a final grade of at least 18/30.
