COURSE PRESENTATION

Summer courses in Rome provide a new way in studying classical languages: in a short yet intensive time, they offer to international scholars and entushiasts an incredible experience, which combines the scientific nature of the Higher Education Courses at the IISC with the emotion of reviving the life of the Classical authors in the very same places where they have lived, together with friends who share a common love for literature and humanities. Classes are open to everyone and they require students to speak only in Latin, through the “IISC inductive-contextual methodology”.

DIDACTIC OFFERINGS

The lessons, taught through the inductive-contextual method (that is, through the active use of written and spoken Latin, initially by the lecturer, and then by the learners as well), provide the best opportunities to study the subject in depth.Stemming from this solid background, the learners are asked to actively use the rules they have learned, both in speaking and writing. Lessons progress in three different levels: Basic – Intermediate – Advanced. Students may decide to attend one or two levels or the whole course to reach a complete knowledge and understanding of the Latin language.
Lessons take place in the morning, from Monday to Friday. Single levels last two weeks; the fourth week is shared by two levels, i.e. Intermediate and Advanced. The whole course lasts 5 weeks.

The Basic level is open to everyone: no pre-requisite is needed.
Those who whish to attend the Intermediate or Advanced level (without attending the Basic level) must take an entrance exam. We suggest to those who have not previous and sound konwledge of Latin through active use to attend the course starting from the Basic level.
Lessons require a serious commitment: professors will ask to spend some of the free time in personal study. The course deals with the entirety of Latin grammar and guarantees the learning of 2000 most frequent Latin words, which correspond to the 90% of the Classical authors’ vocabulary.

Cultural field trips:
Besides lessons in class, the course offers an unique opportunity to the lovers of the beauty and art of Rome. At the end of every week of lessons, on Saturday, participants will be offered with three guided visits to archeological sites in Rome, where they will walk among the beauty of the City speaking in Latin and reading texts of the Latin literature. The archeological sites will be: Colosseum, Roman Forum, Ancient Ostia.

CERTIFICATES

Upon conclusion of the course, the Italian Institute for Classical Studies will grant a certificate attesting to the successful completion of the course.

In order to obtain the certificate, it is necessary:

Have attended at least 75% of the course hours.

UNIVERSITY CREDITS (CFU / ECTS)

The course can provide university credits.

On the basis of an agreement between the two institutions, the course is considered equivalent to those of the Pontifical Salesian University of Rome. Thanks to this convention, university students who have obtained the certificate of completion of the course will receive 8 CFU / ECTS for each level valid at that Athenaeum, for an overall amount of maximum 24 CFU/ECTS for the entire course.

Since the certifications of the Pontifical Salesian University are recognized by the Italian State, credits obtained at the IICS are then able to be convalidated by state universities (without prejudice to the discretion that Italian law attributes to each individual institution).

The final grade indicated on the certificate is calculated out of 30, and will be calculated on the basis of the final exam grade and other possible evaluations by the instructors made throughout the course.

In order to obtain the certificate, it is necessary:

  • Have attended at least 75% of the course hours ;
  • To have attained a final grade of at least 18/30.
