A unique cultural experience in the heart of Rome, in direct contact with the language of the culture that shaped the literature, thought, and the feeling of ancient Roman times and of Europe as a whole. Held under the patronage of the Municipality of Rome, the course is structured in three progressive modules, from Basic to Advanced. You may decide to attend one or all three modules. Learning is quick and guaranteed: you will study grammar and vocabulary, learn thousands of words, thus becoming fluent in reading literary Greek.

COURSE DELAYED
It is with deep sadness that we announce the cancellation of ΠΑΙΓΝΙΑ 2020. Because of the uncertainty of our current situation due to Covid-19 pandemic, we have made this decision in order to guarantee the safety and health of our students and professors. The course will be rescheduled for 2021.
We wish to inform those who may be interested in our courses that the Italian Institute of Classical Studies will provide new online courses of Latin and Ancient Greek.
COURSE PRESENTATION
Summer courses in Rome represent an innovative solution for studying classical languages. In a short yet very intense period of time, scholars and language enthusiasts worldwide are guaranteed an unprecedented study experience, one that combines the IISC’s higher education with the thrill of experiencing the life of the classics along with friends and classmates who share a love for literature, precisely in the places where it lived and was spoken.
Π.ΑΙ.ΓΝ.ΙΑ. is the Greek curriculum of our Summer Courses in Rome. Lessons are open and addressed to everyone, and Ancient Greek is the only language used to communicate, through the “IISC method”, which uses an inductive-contextual method.
TEACHING METHOD
Our professors only use Greek throughout the course and, right from the very first lesson, with precise methodological awareness, they guide students to do the same, both in writing and orally. The lessons proceed in a gradual, progressive, and unitary manner, differentiating themselves in three modules: Basic – Intermediate – Advanced. You can attend one or all three modules (the entire course), in order to reach a maximum level of knowledge and understanding of Greek.
Classes will be held from Monday to Friday. Each module lasts two weeks. The fourth week is common to two modules. The complete course lasts five weeks. The Basic course is open to all, without the need for prerequisites. The only pre-requisite is a knowledge of the Greek alphabet.
Anyone wishing to directly attend the Intermediate or Advanced modules will have to take a preliminary test. Generally, this option is not recommended for those who have not previously acquired good active skills in Ancient Greek.
The lessons require careful attention and frequent attendance. We recommend you dedicate part of your free time to personal studies. The course covers all Greek grammar and guarantees learning the 2,000 most frequently used Greek words in classical literature, which correspond to 90% of the lexicon used by authors.
Cultural Field Trips
In addition to classroom lessons, the course offers an extraordinary opportunity for those who love historical beauty and Rome. At the end of the week, on Saturday, three visits to famous archeological sites will be organized, where you can converse in Greek and read passages from works of Greek literature. The destinations include the Colosseum, the Imperial Fora, and Ostia Antica.
