With the aim of providing formation to a new generation of academics that will allow them to gain access to the great literary patrimony of the Classical, Late-Antique, and Medieval ages, and so re-weave the cultural bonds between Arabic and European civilizations, the Italian Institute for Classical Studies and the University of Jordan are offering a summer intensive course in Living Latin, a singular event in the panorama of inter-cultural academic offerings.
The course is five weeks in duration, and is characterized by the use of Latin as the sole language of communication. The inductive-contextual method employed ensures a more effective and rapid pace for learning grammar, vocabulary and phraseological nexus, indispensable instruments for a solid and authentic knowledge of the language.
Students will be gradually accompanied as they progress from learning basic grammatical foundations to fully mastering Latin linguistic knowledge. Even starting with the basics, students will acquire the competencies necessary to read classical texts directly in their original language, without the help of dictionaries or translations.
Classroom Lessons:
Classroom lessons are held in the morning, and cover all grammatical structures in addition to the 2000 most frequently used words in Latin literature.
Our teaching method consists of moments alternating between lecture-based lessons and oral and written language-usage exercises, accompanied by activities that call for students’ direct involvement and active participation.
Afternoons are dedicated to personal study, and to the completion of homework and exercises. Those students who so desire may avail themselves of tutoring guided by IICS instructors.
Cultural Visits:
Throughout the duration of the course, two didactic excursions at archeological sites in Jordan characterized by the ancient presence of the Romans will be organized. On these occasions, IICS instructors will accompany students, presenting them with an original Latin literary text related to the archeological site visited.
