THE COURSE WILL NOT BE ACTIVATED FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2020/21

In order to guarantee the health and safety measures, the course will not be activated in the academic year 2020/21.

DIDACTIC OFFERINGS

The course offers readings of selected classical texts in the original language. After the Latin reading, the teacher will clarify and explain the meanings of unknown words and the grammar. With the teacher’s help, students will be able to immediately understand the meaning of the Latin text. Then, students will write the Italian translation of the Latin text, in order to confront the translation with the specific features of the Latin language. Finally, the teacher will also address the cultural environment in which the text was written. In this way, it will be possible to revive and renew a deeper connection with the language of Ancient Rome, highlighting Latin’s unique and immortal beauty, through the comparison with modern languages.

CURRICULUM

Lessons include the reading of several classical texts, offering a thorough analysis of the Latin language, which allows participants to ground and wide their knowledges through a direct connection with the language. Students will also practice their skills in translating the original text, focusing on the esthetic and creativity of translations. The texts, which will be given to the students by the teacher, are selected among the books of some of the greatest classical authors. Starting from the original text, students will also deal with the most important features of Latin grammar and rethoric. The texts will go through the most significant events of Roman history with a focus on Rome culture and politics.

ADMISSION

Students of Tirones can enroll to the course by right, as the students of the other courses of the Italian Institute of Classical Studies. Also external students are admitted to the course but we suggest participants to have at least an elementary knowledge of the Latin language.
